QUICK ANSWER

Make the restaurant easy for machines and humans to verify. Keep the website public and crawlable, allow relevant search crawlers, publish complete pages for menus and occasions, maintain an accurate Google Business Profile, use valid LocalBusiness structured data, earn genuine third-party proof, make booking frictionless and measure traffic from both traditional and AI search.

It does not remove the fundamentals.

That changes the shape of search.

The answer may be assembled from websites, business listings, maps, reviews and other public sources.

  • Where should I take ten people for dinner in Brisbane?
  • Find an Italian restaurant near New Farm with outdoor seating.
  • Which restaurants have a private room and good vegetarian options?
  • Give me three date-night restaurants open after 9pm.
  • What is a good restaurant near the theatre before Saturday’s show?

No tactic guarantees a recommendation.

Anyone selling a guaranteed top position in ChatGPT or Google AI is selling certainty the platforms do not offer.

What “AI search optimisation” really means

It is tempting to invent a new acronym and sell a new mystery.

For a local restaurant, the practical work is less exotic:

  • Clear identity
  • Accurate facts
  • Useful pages
  • Crawlable content
  • Consistent public information
  • First-hand proof
  • Strong images
  • Real reviews
  • Easy booking
  • Technical hygiene

Google’s guidance says its established SEO best practices remain relevant to generative AI experiences, with an emphasis on valuable, unique content rather than a special AI-only trick.

OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search and advises publishers not to block OAI-SearchBot when they want content discovered and surfaced in search results.

The new layer is not magic markup.

It is being understandable enough to cite.

The AI recommendation stack

Think in five layers.

Layer 1: Can the site be accessed?

A perfect private-dining page is useless when the crawler cannot read it.

Check:

  • The page is public
  • It is not accidentally marked noindex
  • Important text exists in the rendered HTML
  • The robots file does not block the relevant crawler
  • Canonical tags point to the correct URL
  • The page returns a successful status
  • Mobile users can access the same core content
  • The booking flow does not require an app before basic information is visible

For ChatGPT search, review the site’s robots.txt and confirm OAI-SearchBot is not blocked.

A simple permission can look like:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

Do not paste this blindly.

First inspect the full robots file and make sure another rule is not creating an unintended conflict.

OAI-SearchBot is not GPTBot

These are separate controls.

OpenAI’s publisher guidance distinguishes the search crawler from GPTBot, which publishers can block on pages they want excluded from potential model training.

A venue may choose to allow search discovery while making a different decision about training.

That is a business and technical choice, not a restaurant-marketing slogan.

Layer 2: Can the restaurant be understood?

An AI system should not have to guess:

  • The exact venue name
  • Address
  • Suburb
  • Cuisine
  • Opening hours
  • Price level
  • Booking method
  • Service formats
  • Accessibility
  • Dietary options
  • Group capacity
  • Private-dining options
  • Whether children are welcome
  • Whether outdoor seating exists
  • Whether the kitchen is open late

Put important facts in plain text.

Not only in:

  • A JPEG menu
  • A social caption
  • A third-party booking widget
  • A PDF
  • A video with no transcript
  • An image carousel
  • A pop-up
  • An Instagram bio

The website should be the most complete, current version of the truth.

The one-sentence identity test

Can the homepage say this clearly?

[Venue] is a [type of venue] in [suburb/city], known for [specific experience], open [relevant days/times], with [important format or occasion].

Example:

Luna is a neighbourhood cocktail bar and modern Italian restaurant in Fortitude Valley, open Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm, with late dining and a private room for groups of up to 28.

That sentence is not glamorous.

It is useful.

Layer 3: Is there a page for the question?

A homepage cannot answer every high-intent query well.

Create dedicated pages for real dining decisions.

Useful restaurant pages

  • /menu
  • /book
  • /private-dining
  • /functions
  • /bottomless-brunch
  • /weekday-lunch
  • /date-night
  • /group-dining
  • /vegetarian-dining
  • /gluten-free-options
  • /late-night-dining
  • /pre-theatre-dining
  • /christmas-parties
  • /new-years-eve
  • /parking-and-directions
  • /about
  • /contact

Do not create a thin page for every suburb in Queensland.

Build pages where the restaurant has a real offer, relevant information and a clear booking path.

The page formula

A strong occasion page includes:

  1. Direct answer
  2. Who it suits
  3. Real photos
  4. Menu or inclusions
  5. Price
  6. Dates and times
  7. Capacity
  8. Dietary information
  9. Location and transport
  10. Booking or enquiry action
  11. Terms that matter
  12. Last updated date where information changes

The goal is not to repeat a keyword 18 times.

The goal is to become the easiest source to quote accurately.

Layer 4: Do other sources agree?

A restaurant can make any claim on its own website.

Recommendations become more credible when public sources align.

Check consistency across:

  • Google Business Profile
  • Venue website
  • Booking platform
  • Social profiles
  • Tourism and precinct websites
  • Media coverage
  • Association listings
  • Event pages
  • Delivery profiles
  • Genuine customer reviews

The name, address, hours and core offer should not contradict one another.

Google explains that local results are primarily based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that complete, accurate Business Profile information can help a business match relevant searches.

For a restaurant, this means the website and Business Profile should tell the same story.

Third-party proof worth earning

  • A genuine local guide inclusion
  • Precinct or tourism listing
  • Supplier feature
  • Event-partner page
  • Association profile
  • Thoughtful editorial review
  • Public customer reviews
  • Venue award with a verifiable source
  • Collaboration with a nearby theatre, hotel or event venue

Do not buy fake “best restaurants” placements from anonymous websites purely for links.

A weak page calling you Brisbane’s number-one restaurant does not become true because it is external.

Layer 5: Can the person act immediately?

A recommendation without a working action is a leak.

Every important page should make the next step obvious:

  • Book a table
  • View the menu
  • Call the venue
  • Get directions
  • Enquire about an event
  • Check availability
  • Join the waitlist

Test the full journey on a phone.

A person asking an AI assistant for dinner ideas may be ready to act now.

Do not make them hunt through five pages to find tonight’s menu.

The 12-point restaurant AI search checklist

1. Allow the search crawler you want

  • [ ] Review robots.txt
  • [ ] Confirm OAI-SearchBot is not blocked when ChatGPT search visibility is desired
  • [ ] Confirm Googlebot can access public content
  • [ ] Check important pages for accidental noindex

2. Keep one canonical version of every key page

  • [ ] One menu URL
  • [ ] One private-dining URL
  • [ ] One contact page
  • [ ] Correct canonical tags
  • [ ] Old campaign URLs redirected where appropriate

3. Put important information in HTML

  • [ ] Hours are text
  • [ ] Address is text
  • [ ] Menu highlights are text
  • [ ] Price and capacity are text
  • [ ] Booking action is a real link or button
  • [ ] Images have meaningful alt text

4. Complete the Google Business Profile

  • [ ] Correct primary category
  • [ ] Exact hours
  • [ ] Special hours
  • [ ] Menu link
  • [ ] Booking link
  • [ ] Current photos
  • [ ] Genuine review system

5. Add valid structured data

Google’s LocalBusiness structured data can provide details such as hours, departments and other business information, while its structured-data policies require markup to represent visible, accurate page content.

For a restaurant, review:

  • Restaurant or an appropriate LocalBusiness subtype
  • Name
  • URL
  • Telephone
  • Address
  • Geo coordinates
  • Opening hours
  • Price range
  • Image
  • Menu URL
  • Reservation action where valid
  • Social profile references where appropriate

Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator.

Structured data helps machines understand.

It does not override reality or guarantee a result.

6. Build pages around genuine occasions

  • [ ] Private dining
  • [ ] Group bookings
  • [ ] Lunch
  • [ ] Late dining
  • [ ] Events
  • [ ] Dietary needs
  • [ ] Nearby landmarks or pre-event dining where genuinely relevant

7. Publish original proof

  • [ ] Real venue photos
  • [ ] Real menu
  • [ ] Real room capacities
  • [ ] Real team and chef information
  • [ ] Real examples
  • [ ] Clearly labelled illustrative images
  • [ ] Updated details

Google’s people-first guidance asks whether content demonstrates first-hand expertise, provides original value and serves an existing audience rather than being mass-produced for search.

Restaurants have an advantage.

They own the experience the internet is trying to describe.

8. Grow genuine reviews

  • [ ] Direct review link
  • [ ] No incentives
  • [ ] No review gating
  • [ ] Human responses
  • [ ] Operational follow-through

Reviews can reveal specific facts such as atmosphere, dishes, service and occasion fit.

Do not script those facts into the guest’s mouth.

9. Earn relevant mentions

  • [ ] Local precinct
  • [ ] Nearby accommodation partners
  • [ ] Event partners
  • [ ] Suppliers
  • [ ] Tourism pages
  • [ ] Relevant editorial coverage

10. Make booking accessible

  • [ ] Booking button works
  • [ ] Phone number is clickable
  • [ ] Enquiry form is short
  • [ ] Availability instructions are clear
  • [ ] No mandatory account before basic information
  • [ ] Confirmation page works

11. Keep facts current

  • [ ] Monthly information audit
  • [ ] Holiday hours
  • [ ] Current menu
  • [ ] Current capacities
  • [ ] Expired offers removed
  • [ ] Old event pages updated or redirected

12. Measure what arrives

  • [ ] Search Console installed
  • [ ] Analytics installed
  • [ ] Booking conversions tracked
  • [ ] Enquiry sources recorded
  • [ ] ChatGPT referral traffic monitored
  • [ ] Google AI visibility report checked where available

OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs automatically include a ChatGPT referral source parameter, which can be measured in analytics.

In June 2026, Google announced dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console for a subset of websites, covering visibility in features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Availability is being rolled out.

Do not assume the report exists in every account yet.

What AI search cannot fix

AI visibility will not repair:

  • Wrong hours
  • A poor rating caused by real operational issues
  • A menu hidden behind an expired PDF
  • Slow reply times
  • No booking availability
  • Misleading photography
  • Inconsistent naming
  • A private-dining page with no capacity or price
  • A website that does not work on mobile
  • A concept nobody can explain

Do not optimise the description of a broken experience before fixing the experience.

Seven pages with stronger click potential than generic blogging

Instead of publishing:

Five Food Trends for 2026

Publish:

  1. Best pre-theatre dinner near [real venue]
  2. Private dining in [suburb]: capacities, menus and pricing
  3. Where to eat after 9pm in [area]
  4. A practical guide to group dining at [venue]
  5. Gluten-free dining at [venue]: what we can and cannot accommodate
  6. How much does dinner at [venue] cost? Three example orders
  7. Parking, public transport and the easiest way to reach [venue]

These pages are narrower.

That is the point.

They answer the decision.

The “source-worthy” page test

Ask:

  • Is the answer visible in the first screen?
  • Are facts specific?
  • Is the information current?
  • Can a person verify the claim?
  • Is the page materially better than the homepage?
  • Are the images real?
  • Is there first-hand detail?
  • Does the page explain limitations?
  • Is the next action obvious?
  • Would you confidently send this page to a guest?

If not, do not expect a search system to trust it more than a human would.

Common AI-search mistakes

Publishing hundreds of thin AI pages

Mass does not create authority.

It creates a maintenance problem.

Creating fake local pages

A Fortitude Valley restaurant does not need separate near-identical pages for 40 suburbs.

Hiding everything in Instagram

Social profiles are useful.

They are not a replacement for a complete, crawlable website.

Adding schema for facts not on the page

Structured data should match visible content.

Calling every article “the ultimate guide”

The adjective does not make the answer complete.

Treating ChatGPT as one fixed ranking

AI answers can vary by query wording, context, location, source availability and product changes.

There is no single permanent position one.

Confusing traffic with bookings

Track the action after the click.

A citation that produces no useful visit may still build awareness, but it is not the same as a confirmed booking.

The bigger opportunity

AI search rewards a habit restaurants should already have:

Make the truth easy to find.

The venue with the clearest menu, hours, occasion pages, practical information, real proof and direct booking route is easier to recommend everywhere.

To a diner.

To Google.

To ChatGPT.

To a concierge.

To a hotel partner.

To a friend in a group chat.

That is not a shortcut.

It is good hospitality translated onto the internet.

FAQ

Can I pay to get my restaurant recommended by ChatGPT?

OpenAI does not offer a guaranteed organic recommendation position. Any public website may appear in ChatGPT search, subject to discovery and relevance. Treat anyone promising a guaranteed recommendation with caution.

Do I need a special AI schema?

There is no universal “AI recommendation” schema. Use accurate, supported structured data such as Restaurant or LocalBusiness where appropriate, and follow the platform’s technical guidelines.

Should I allow GPTBot?

GPTBot relates to potential model training, while OAI-SearchBot relates to search discovery. OpenAI provides separate controls, so decide deliberately with your developer rather than assuming they are the same.

How do I track traffic from ChatGPT?

OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs include a ChatGPT referral source parameter. Check acquisition reports in your analytics platform and track whether those visits reach menus, bookings or enquiries.

How do I track visibility in Google AI Overviews?

Google began rolling out dedicated generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026 to a subset of sites. Check whether the report is available in your property and continue monitoring normal Search Console data as well.

How long does this take?

Technical fixes can be completed quickly. Discovery, indexing, third-party proof and recommendation visibility do not have guaranteed timelines. Build useful pages, keep them current and measure over time.
